Bhuwan Ribhu: the first Indian to be awarded the prestigious “ Medal of Honour” Award
New Delhi. For his contributions to Child Protection and upholding the Rule of Law by the World Jurist Association at World Law Congress in Dominican Republic, Mr. Bhuwan Ribhu, a senior lawyer and Child Rights Activist from New Delhi was awarded the prestigious “The Medal of Honour” Award for his contribution to the protection of Child Rights.
He has been rigorously working for the protection of Child Rights and specially against Child Labour, Trafficking, Child marriages, Sexual abuse for last three decades. He has used strategic litigation to get more than 80 landmark judgements from Constitutional courts (High Courts & Supreme Court) in India. He has made important contributions to almost all the laws on child Protection that have been drafted over the last two decades.
Some of the important judgement includes 2011 Circus case 2013 Missing children Case & 2024 CSEAM judgement & 2023 Support Person Case.
Apart from his legal contributions he is also an activist who has led hundreds of rescue interventions in the ground on combatting child trafficking in India and South Asia.
Today as the founder of Just Rights for Children his leadership is providing support to 300 plus grassroots organizations across India , Nepal , Kenya and the US. His resolve and commitment in standing up and raising a voice against injustice is unwavering. Under his leadership and vision a mass movement against child marriage has been initiated as “Child Marriage Free India”. Millions of Indians have pledged support to the campaign.
This prestigious award is also a testimony of the hard work done by 300+ grassroot organizations under the leadership and vision of Bhuwan Ribhu who have worked tirelessly for upholding the rights of children in India and South Asia. It is a clarion call that Justice is not only delivered in the courtrooms, but also built through years of hardwork, sustained advocacy, enhanced institutional framework and reshaping the ecosystem of Justice and Protection.
The award enhances India’s standing on the global stage as a country committed to justice and dignity for all. It will drive the momentum for policy reforms, institutional accountability, and propel greater support both domestic and international for building a more just, protective, and responsive system for children in India.
